Smooth / Silky Coat Grooming

Smooth and silky coats are the easiest coats I groom — fine single-layer hair that lies flat, takes conditioner beautifully, and finishes quickly. At Kay's Groom Room a smooth-coat groom runs 45–90 minutes and prices toward the lower end of the range. The technique is simple but requires a light touch: a gentle bath, silk-friendly conditioner, a low-velocity straight-dry to preserve the shine, and tidy scissor work on any feathering. These coats don't mat like curly coats, but long feathering on ears, tail, and legs tangles if neglected. Every appointment is one-on-one in my in-home studio in Seagoville, TX — a calm setting that's especially important for the small, sometimes-nervous breeds that carry this coat type (Yorkie, Maltese, Cavalier).

Characteristics

  • Lies flat, minimal volume
  • Low shedding (most breeds)
  • Easy to maintain at home
  • Benefits from conditioning to keep shine

Professional tools

  • Soft-pin brush or bristle brush
  • Low-velocity dryer
  • Fine-tooth comb for detail
  • Scissors for tidy work

Technique

Bathe, condition, blow straight-dry, tidy scissor work on feathering and sanitary areas.

At-home care between grooms

  • Brush every other day with a pin brush or bristle brush — slickers can damage fine silky hair
  • Use a leave-in conditioning spray on ears and tail feathering to prevent tangling
  • Wipe under the eyes daily on light-coated breeds to manage tear staining
  • A weekly bath is fine for silky coats as long as a good conditioner follows the shampoo

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using a slicker brush or undercoat rake — both can snap fine silky hair
  • High-velocity drying directly on the face and ears — too harsh for a thin coat
  • Over-bathing without conditioning — strips the natural oils that give the coat its shine
  • Cutting off feathering 'to simplify' — removes the breed's signature look without shortening the maintenance schedule much

Pricing note

Smooth coats are typically the most affordable grooms — they're fast and low-labor.

Smooth / Silky Coat — FAQs

Smooth coats take about half the time — no line-brushing required, no stand-dryer fluff needed, and most of the work is just bath, straight-dry, and feather tidy. Less time equals a lower price. A small Yorkie or Cavalier finishes in about an hour.
