Poodle Grooming

Poodles are the most rewarding breed I groom — the single-layer curly coat holds shape like no other, which means skilled scissor work actually shows. At Kay's Groom Room a Poodle groom runs 2–3 hours and ranges from $75 for a Toy to $150 for a Standard, covering line-brushing, bath, full fluff-dry on a stand dryer, clipper work, and a hand-scissor finish. The coat grows continuously, so a 3–5 week cadence is non-negotiable — skip it and you end up with a pelt that has to be clipped short. Every appointment is one-on-one in my in-home studio in Seagoville, TX, with no other dogs in the space. I groom Poodles from across the southeast DFW metro, including Mesquite, Balch Springs, Kaufman, Forney, and Dallas.

What a typical Poodle session looks like

  1. 1Arrival and settle on the grooming table
  2. 2Full line-brush with slicker + comb to check for any pelting
  3. 3Warm bath with conditioning shampoo, double rinse
  4. 4Fluff-dry on a stand dryer to straighten the curl for clipper work
  5. 5Clipper body to requested length, with guarded or skip-tooth blades
  6. 6Hand-scissor finish on face, feet, tail pom, and topknot
  7. 7Nail trim, ear pluck if comfortable, and a finishing spritz

At-home routine between grooms

  • Line-brush every single day — curly coats do not give you a grace period
  • Comb through ear fringes and the topknot separately; that's where mats start
  • Keep the face, feet, and sanitary area clean between grooms with a damp cloth
  • Book 3–5 weeks out, not 6–8 — once a Poodle pelts, the cut has to start over

Poodle coats are my favorite to shape. Tell me if you want show, sport, or pet clip — each has very different maintenance windows.

Poodle grooming — FAQs

A show cut (Continental or English Saddle) leaves long puffs on the hips and chest with shaved hindquarters — high-maintenance and rarely practical for a pet. A sport cut is short and even everywhere with a scissored face and topknot. A pet cut (Puppy or Lamb) keeps one length all over for easy upkeep. Tell me your lifestyle and I'll recommend the right one.
