Matting Rescue
Matting is one of the most common reasons dogs come to Kay's Groom Room for the first time, and I want you to know up front: there is no judgment here. Matting happens — life gets busy, schedules slip, a rescue arrives with a pelted coat, a senior dog can't tolerate at-home brushing anymore. At drop-off I do an honest mat assessment and tell you exactly what's humane for your dog's skin today. Light mats I'll work through by hand. Moderate to severe matting (pelted to the skin) gets clipped short — it's the only way to protect the skin, and the coat rebuilds over the next 2–3 grooms. The matting fee is +$20 for light, +$30 moderate, +$40 severe, on top of a standard Full Groom. One-on-one, in-home, in Seagoville, TX.

The problem
Mats pull the skin constantly, trap moisture, hide infections, and cause chronic discomfort. Severe matting cannot be safely brushed out — it must be clipped.
Signs your dog may need this
- Hard lumps you can't push a comb through, especially behind ears and in armpits
- Skin pulls visibly when you try to brush or lift the coat
- Musty or sour smell — mats trap moisture and bacteria
- Dog flinches or pulls away when an area is touched
- Pelted feel — the coat moves as one sheet instead of separate hairs
- Visible skin irritation, redness, or sores once the coat is lifted
Kay's approach
At drop-off I assess mat severity honestly. For light mats I'll carefully dematt. For moderate to severe matting, a shave-down is the only humane option. We'll rebuild the coat together over the next few appointments.
What to expect
- Honest mat severity assessment at drop-off
- Skin-sensitive bath with soothing shampoo
- Post-groom skin check for previously hidden issues
- A plan for the next 2–3 appointments to rebuild the coat
Prevention tips
- Brush 3–5 minutes daily with a slicker + comb
- Line-brush (not surface-brush) — reach the skin
- Book a full groom every 4–6 weeks for long-coat breeds
- Never bathe a matted coat at home — water tightens mats
What progress looks like
- 1
First visit (rescue groom)
Honest mat assessment, skin-sensitive shave-down if severe, post-groom skin check for any hidden issues. Matting fee applies. Expect a shorter cut than you asked for — skin comfort is non-negotiable.
- 2
Visit 2 (4 weeks later)
Coat is rebuilding — usually still short but evening out. A standard Full Groom with a brief re-check. No matting fee if you've been on schedule.
- 3
Visit 3 and beyond (maintenance)
Coat back to workable length. We discuss at-home routine and lock in a 4–6 week cadence so we never repeat the rescue groom.
